Thriller Audience Research

The target audience for our thriller is aimed at an age group between 16-24. As the gap has the majority spending spree on merchandises. The sense of action can appeal to males, as they want to have the representation to be the character as they are not able to do in their personal life. The type of class would be aimed at is the working class because it is based around working class characters. As the target audience can have interest in violence, fighting scenes would suit them best if fighting is in their personal hobbies. The film can be based around all ethnic backgrounds as the background of individual character can relate to the audience.

Se7en Essay

What makes a thriller and how is the evident in 'Se7en'? An macro and micro analysis of 'Se7en' (David Fincher, 1995).
 
 
The film is an American 1995 Academy Award, BAFTA nominated crime, which falls under the thriller genre. It can be suggested as a thriller because a thriller is suspenseful sensational story of film. The film have been directed by David Fincher who has done other block buster films such as zodiac, panic room, fight club, an alien 3.which have similar characteristic, sharing the same thriller concept. In addition, the film was created by new line cinema production this is well known production, as it means the audience expect brilliance from the film.
 
 
The film is also has major actors who make the film more interesting to watch. Also, that the actors are Academy Awards. Winners, they are Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. Al tough it was from other films this is still able to make a huge impact on the film. This is because having big stars puts the film on the map to do well.
 
 
The film is based around two detectives, who are detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman)
And detective Mills (Brat Pitt). They are considered to be the complete opposite, with detective Somerset being the wise police and doing things by the books. As detective Mills is suggested to be more of a hot headed police, who likes to go straight into the action. For this to conclude that they are brought together to solve the mystery of murders that have been occurring, and who us behind the plot of murders. In addiction, this makes it suited to be a thriller because the plot is able to hold suspense and mystery.
 
 
The film is targeted at an audience of 18 to 49 year old. This is because male characters are able to hold sense of action within the film. This is good for working class male between age of 18 to go who like to feel like an action hero, as the character detective Mills is out to kill the antagonist. Making that target audience want to be like the protagonist detective Mills, which makes them feel they have excitement in there life. More over, the females could enjoy watching detective Mills in action. This because the character played by Brad Pitt who is considered to be attractive to the female audience. Usually females in their 20's to 30'
 
 
Also detective Somerset is an older and wiser character who is able to appeal to a targeted audience of male age group of 30 to 49, they could relate to his character. This could result that detective Somerset is going to retiring age and that he is planning relax towards end of his life. This again can have an impact on the intended audience who their sight set on retiring later in life.
 
 
The film goes on to display different types of narrative techniques. This is able to create variety of different contrast to make it a thriller. As in the first opening scene is in set in the morning, which it then jumps to the next shot of him in the evening preparing for the next day. It’s able to use restriction to how much we know about detective Somerset.
 
 
 
 The film continues, as the setting is in a living room small apartment. This scene causes disruption, as some has been killed; this is then preceded as a sign of murder. The codes and convention used are omniscient for the character perspective and aspect on the room. Also, it uses more dark tone to bring dramatic tension.
 
 
In the next processes of the film it cuts into the police investigating the second murder related to the seven deadly sins. This is one of the two murders that have already occurred, the first was gluttony and the one that has occurred is greed. The convention and codes is enigma because of the mysterious murder which leads the audience questioning. This is also able to create sense of interest on how the story goes. It then increases the complex action. It is able to use simultaneous action used to switch between detective Mills and Somerset during the scene. The scene also includes,
 Bright lighting is used to represent the relief of the scene.
 
In the following scene the location is set within a building; police department to display disruption within the story. As another murder has occurred that links to reporters wanting to receive background information on the event. This able to outline that the identity of the antagonist is unknown towards the audience and the characters.
 
The scene and the setting are located in a library late in the evening. The narrative is equilibrium as the guards are playing a game of poker illustrating that there is no immediate danger in the scene. Where as the detective Somerset is unveiling the purpose of the murders. This is able to display that detective Somerset is the protagonist trying to unveil the antagonist. Furthermore, the micro aspect is the mild lighting and classical music, which outlines the equilibrium in the scene.
 
The scene at detective Mills apartment, set during the evening. The narrative stage is equilibrium as detective Mills wife Tracey has invited detective Somerset for dinner. In addition, the relationship between Tracey and detective Mills creates an enigma code as the relationship is unknown towards the audience, restricting the amount they know about the characters. With the use of simultaneous action used to signify the interaction between the characters.
 
 
 
The motel and the lawyers office has lead to disruption. The two detectives are lead to a clue that can unveil the antagonist identity.  Action code; the use of detective are tracking the mysterious antagonist. Mid shot is used to display to the audience the upper body movement of characters. The disruption is lead into the scene of the apartment, which is set during the day. As the killer has been suspected by the police, but the suspect has become a victim to the real antagonist, whose identity is still mysterious. Use of suspense and disruption throughout the scene to that keeps the audience guessing.
 
During the cafĂ© that is ser in the morning the audience are provided details of Tracey. In this equilibrium, Tracey informs detective Somerset about being pregnant with detective Mills baby, but does not know how to tell him. Sound is used to blend in with the atmosphere of the scene, which is a calm and equilibrium mood.  With the use of police department, library, restaurant and barbers that suggest to the audience that the antagonist is linked to the places. The examples are a list of location that could link to the antagonist identity.

Disruption in the thriller to outline that something significant has occurred within the plot. The suspect’s apartment, which leads to the police and the two main detectives explore the evidence that link to the murder scene. This links to a scene where another person has been killed and a man witness her death. The use of action code; mysterious of the next victim unrevealed and use of unresolved mystery to outline the restriction towards the audience as they feel the suspense of the on going investigation.
 
Towards the end of the film more is revealed to the audience. This is displayed through code and convention as well as narrative. With the antagonist revealing himself to be John Doa is able to create tension between himself and detective Mills. In addition the use of simultaneous action between characters as dialogue is being exchanged. The audience are quickly drawn to weather detectives Mills was going to kill John Doa as suspense continuous.
 
Equilibrium is used at the end of the film to outline order has been restored. As the antagonist is shot by detective Mills, which leads Mills into custody for the murder of John Doa. This makes detective Somerset decides not to retire. With omniscient used to capture the ending of the story with a new equilibrium. Moreover, the use of dark tone is a sign of loss within the story and the character detective Mills.

The Package



In the opening scene the camera shot used is establishing shot, as it is able to capture the scene. Then as the first character walks into the scene we are able to see a long shot of when the character about to open the door, which switches to a mid shot of the character approaching the door, which switches to a mid shot of the character about to open the door. At that same time and moment narrative technique is used; simultaneous action for the first characters hand opening the door, with an additional close up shot and then switches to a mid shot of the character doing the same action. Moreover, the scene includes a shot reverse shot, as character entering the door from the outside, while entering the door from a another perspective shot from the inside of the room.

As the fist character sits down to exchange the package with the second character, a mid shot is display showing the body of the second character, but little is shown of the face. This is restriction as it is difficult to recognize the second characters identity. A 180 degree shot is used to capture the conversation between the two characters and the exchange over of the package. At the end the first character walks out of the room with the package, this is to capture the view of out of the room. Again as he exits the room simultaneous action is used, just like he entered the room with cross cutting action. In addition, the convention codes used is action code; as to what is the first characters next movement. A long shot is used to display character movement coming out of the room.

in the next sequence of the thriller, omniscient is used as their a point of view shot illustrating the character being followed, though the character does not know the audience is able to know. Simultaneous action is then used to reveal the appearance of the mysterious third character following the first character. Although, the third characters identity is not reveal. It goes on to show the first character, still being followed by the third character down the stairs he turns round. It this action shot the audience are able to view P.O.V shot of the first character turning around. In the next sequence an transition of the characters being knocked out with the use of blackout. As the first character begins to come to his sense blur transition is used to create the affect in a P.O.V shot. The scene the cuts to the third character handing the package to the second character, which the audience begins to understand who the antagonist are in the thriller as it fades out with dramatic music.
